An Evening with Eckhart Tolle
Here is a brief bit of what I took away from my evening with Eckhart Tolle: Sunday, April 26, 2009
Cleanse, Play, Sweat
It is amazing to me how different I am from the person I was a decade ago, and yet how much closer I am to who I actually (am) or was as a child. Monday, April 13, 2009
Hey Cat Lady
About four months ago 3 kittens showed up in our neighborhood...cute little things but skiddish... Then about 3-4 weeks later a big black and white tom cat and a little female cat showed up. Rumor is some lady moved and just let them all out.
Thank you to the people who offered support during this adventure, it was much appreciated!Sunday, April 12, 2009
Just Friends
Can men and woman truly just be friends? This is a very popular question, one society has been experimenting with and debating for ages...What do we mean by "friends"? Of coarse we can be friendly and kind to all people if we choose to. But close friends? Who hang out together, go do things together, have long talks about significant things together...? It has been my experience that if you are compatible in that you enjoy spending time with another person doing all of these things, then even if there is no physical connection in the beginning, one will eventually develop from one or both sides of the relationship. I have found this is true even if a friendship is defined from the beginning, there is no physical attraction, or one or the other person is in another significant relationship. It may take a very long time to happen but it is human nature and even the most well intentioned people run the risk of losing a close friendship if they become too intimately connected as "friends".
Now what about the romantic relationship that ends and one or both people want to continue to be "friends"? I think this is a nice idea and one would think that we should be able to do this. But usually a relationship ends because at least one person is no longer interested the other person. So, could this "friendship" idea really be just a one sided ego boost?
Again I think the definition of the word friend applies here too. And as I eluded to before, men and women are not designed to stifle the energetic draw between them, the pull of yin and yang if you will. That is why when a relationship ends it is unrealistic to think you will still be able to have the same kind of friendship relationship with one another and not get things confused.
So, while I definately don't have all the answers, and of coarse to each "rule" there is always the exception (gay men and straight women or vise versa, or related men and women, etc)... It is my opinion that while men and women can definately be friendly, it is unlikely they will be able to maintain for any length of time a truly close plutonic friendship; without one or the other or both becoming romantically interested.

Planting a Seed..
So I heard a passage yesterday that goes something like this...A young man came upon a elderly man who was planting a seed in order to grow a fruit tree. The young man asked him "Why are you planting a seed for a tree whose fruit you're never going to see?" The elderly man replied, "I live my life as if I am never going to die." The young man smiled and thought to himself, "How ironic, I live my life as if today is my last day on earth!"This interests me because many people live as if there were no guarantees of another day here on earth, me being one of them. Go for it! That's been my modo...Do it while there is still time, you never know if tomorrow your are going to get hit by a bus or something!
I think this kind of thought inspires courage to go after what you want and achieve your dreams, but it doesn't speak much to patience and being of service.
I like this new perspective of living as if I am never going to die. The thought itself gives me a chance to pause, take a deep breathe, and consider what to do next. It helps to dissolve fear and anxiety and bring me into the present moment. It also gives me an opportunity to ask,"What can I do to help the planet, an animal or another person have a better experience now and in the years to come...?"

Stop the Merry-go-round...I wanna get off!
We all have multiple voices going on in our heads, some of us are just more aware of them than others.
Isn't it interesting how we can bring up an old argument in our heads (or create a new one for that matter) with a person who is not even in the room with us? We carry on the conversation for all parties involved, completely unaware of what is going on directly in front of us, boosting our own ego in an effort to feel better about ourselves...
Or what about the conversations we have in our heads with ourselves? That's right. You can admit it. Each on of us at some point or another is talking to ourselves albeit most of us don't do it out loud! Sometimes -for those of us are blessed to have some peace- the thoughts are good and benefit us and the quality of our lives. However, quite often we will put ourselves down, discourage our own success, and sabotage our own happiness simply with the thoughts in our own heads.
My first question when realizing this is why? Why would I do that? Why do I do that? I have spent much time contemplating this and the only answer I could come up with is this; there is no why. Asking myself why gets me stuck thinking about myself some more and probably not in the most positive ways. The only chance we have to free our minds is to simply notice when we are doing it and stop.
At first, this is easier said than done. But if you are struggling with this and just want some peace of mind from time to time, here are the solutions I have found to get me off merry-go-round. They are simple, but you know what they say, the best answers usually are.
Take a deep breath and focus on your breathing until the chatter stops. We cannot think about feeling an inhale and exhale, and anything else at the same time. If that is difficult, create a break in the thought cycle by writing down a positive replacement thought. Say it each time you notice you are caught up in repetitive thinking.
If you have other techniques that help you (positive ones!) please let me know! I need all the help I can get ;) Good luck and have fun!

Go Confidently in the direction of your Dreams!
Being present for my life today is one of the most important things I can do to do experience inner peace.
Many of us unconsciously "put the blinders on" or bury our heads in the sand when it comes to changing things about ourselves which hold us back from reaching our goals or fulfilling our dreams. You know that old saying "ignorance is bliss"? Well it seems to me, once we do know what we are hiding from or not looking at and have brought light to it, that is when this saying's real meaning becomes apparent and we suddenly realize... its actually sarcasm!
Ignorance is soooo not bliss.
Bliss to me is finding the courage and strength (which is available to all of us in unlimited quantities if only we find enough faith to believe it) to direct my will power and self control to achieve the goals, dreams or vision I have for my life. But never getting to caught up in the actual how of it, just staying flexible and fluid to go where I am lead; knowing that if I pay attention and focus my intention on what I feel is the best possible way to proceed, success is inevitable.
Now "success" will be different for everyone and I use it loosely here.
But opening my eyes to all of me, releasing fear in order to access the unlimited courage and strength available to me, and using my determination, patience, will power and self control to work with this Strength (God if you like, I do ;) creates a whole new experience of life.
When I can operate in this space I do not have to worry about anything and I have so much more energy than I ever thought possible because I am not using up energy foolishly trying to hold my self back.

Think Good Thoughts

Six years ago I read the Power of Now by Eckart Tolle and it changed my perspective completely. This book, Somebody Should Have Told Us! is another one of those pivotal books for me. Reading this book has changed my experience of life...completely.
I have struggled for much of my adult life with periodic depression. I have been doing quite a bit over the years to try to help myself such as: self help books, seminars, yoga, meditation, journaling, prayer, excersize, counseling, life coaching etc.. All of these things have been very helpful and I have gained great insights and understanding about who I am, what I am and Life in general.
What I am learning today is, it REALLY matters what is going on in my head and that is what I need to be interested in. If I want to be happy I literally need to think happy thoughts. Believe me when I tell you, I know how cliche' this sounds, but it is ABSOLUTELY true. Somehow (I believe through prayer and meditation) I have been able to bring this understanding from my head to my heart, and that has made all the difference. This book entered my life when I was ready to apply and feel the contents of it.
So...I have been experimenting with this concept by not letting a negative thought stay for even a minute in my head. I just notice it come in and let it roll right on by. If need be I replace whatever it is with a positive statement. It's amazing because it is just as easy to CHOOSE to think something positive as it is to think something negative. Do you ever notice if you think of a happy memory you actually feel happy and if you think of a sad memory you actually feel sad? Our thoughts create our emotions and I for one want to be happy and feel good. So I am committed to thinking good thoughts.
This also allows the God of my understanding to Create through me, this happens because He is Good and I am aligned with Him and excersizing my will power to stay in alignment with Him. Good things happen when we think good thoughts.
I know some will say, but"Bad"things happen as well... I say it all depends on what you think about that "bad" thing ...that's what will create the emotions we feel and the emotions will create the experience...So think good thoughts, create Good things and truly LIVE.
God Bless!

2009
The energy of this coming year feels lighter to me, bringing with it a desire to lighten up and have some fun, relax a little and not take myself so seriously. Let go of toxic thinking and choose a simpler more compassionate approach to myself and others.
I am excited to be my beautiful, completely perfect but so completely imperfect self, to shine brightly and enjoy life, each and every moment!
Sincere wishes for a joyful and FUN 2009!

"God...
This statement is probably the only black and white statement that has a valid application and point in my book. The funny thing is, my tendency has been to apply the "black and white approach" to everything but this statement, at least up until recently.
In the circles I run in (makes me sound like a gangsta, doesn't it?!;) I hear this statement frequently. In the past it has made sense to me conceptually and intellectually, but it just recently made the transition from my head to my heart.
I am one of those people who cannot live successfully in this life without the help of a Higher Power. I have a deep, very strong desire to connect with whatever it is out there that is powering the Show.
I have attempted to do things on my own (with solely my ego at the wheel) and for a time I seem to be able to find some measure of success, but none at all of contentment. And for me, life without contentment isn't worth living...
So, I have played with this statement with some very big things in my life. I have given up control to my higher power -whom I choose to call God- in some major areas of my life and what do you know? Complete success. But, there were/are other things that seem "to small for God to handle". I mean surely I don't need help with everything?! ...Uh, ya. 'Fraid so.
The good new is I can help God help me. I can use the gifts I have been given of will power, self control, determination, patience and faith. I can use these gifts to change the things that need changing in my life, with God powering them from within me. I tried this and have had tastes of success. A whole new level of contentment and peace becomes available to me. At first it was only situational for me but then a whole day, then days and even weeks of peace.
But, as with any other thing this is something that will take continual practice and even though I don't always feel the same level of peace and joy; I know they are always there now somewhere in the background.

"There is nothing...
Lately on my quest for increased enlightenment :), my mind has opened up to embracing all the gifts I have been blessed with, as an expression of gratitude. I am not talking about the "stuff" I have or any external blessings, even though I am grateful for abundance in that area of my life as well... What I am talking about are the unique talents, skills, ideas, motivations, etc. I have inside of me.God has given us this particular life, here on earth, in our particular bodies, as an opportunity to further increase awareness of Him and therefore increase the awareness of ourselves as a part of Him. But beyond developing our own awareness we are here to help each other collectively, develop this awareness.
At first some of us are only capable of thinking of ourselves (for a variety of different reasons) but with diligent effort and tremendous honesty we can move beyond our self-centered-ness. We can begin the realize that the gifts we have are not meant to take up residency in our minds, fighting with their neighbors; insecurity, fear and failure. They are meant to go out in the world to be expressed, embraced and used to help God and the world.
Whoa. Right? Sounds pretty grandiose doesn't it? But think about it...
To say that we have no gifts or that we have nothing to offer is kind of like saying to someone you love (God), "Thanks for the beautiful gift(s) you have given me but I am too embarrassed, insecure, afraid etc. to show it to anyone or use it. I'll just put it in a safe place out of the way to "protect it"". Unfortunately over time, we risk forgetting that it's even there and we miss our opportunity to be of Service while we are here.
Many people struggle to find their self-worth and special gifts and as a result end up feeling as though they didn't do anything they "could have" done while they were here.
I believe it helps to think of using the gifts we have as our responsibility. Our responsibility to the Bigger Picture, the world and everything in it. No matter how insignificant we think we are. It may also help to remember that expressing our gifts is an act of gratitude to God for all the blessings we have been given in our lives.
It is after all the season for Thanksgiving...Have a wonderful holiday and God Bless.

Dawn of a New Day!

It's hard to put into words the way this election has affected me.
What I can say is, for the first time in my life I actually feel the collective good in the world! And better than that I feel a part of that good!
At this early stage, many of us can only begin to comprehend how this historic event has impacted the world! What is immediately obvious, is the shift it has brought with it, energetically, philosophically, and intellectually.
My friend Kimberly wrote a beautiful blog on her feelings around this election, she has articulated it perfectly...

To Vote or not to Vote
I was talking to my 18-year old niece a couple of months ago and I asked her who she was going to vote for in the election (now that she was of age to vote). She told me her choice. I asked her why she had chosen this party and she said "Because that's who my dad is voting for.".Sunday, October 12, 2008

Reason, Season, Lifetime
People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person...
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have
come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn...
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.
E relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. Thursday, October 02, 2008
Constant Prayer

There are so many obstacles in the way for some of us, despite our desire. Without the proper support as children and guidance as young adults many of us can become depressed, discouraged and lost.
Personally, I came into the world this way and ended up just the way I described at the mere age of 28.
Without direction, support, and encouragement, dreams can get muddled and we end up living lives that belong to other people in an effort to find something that fits...
Usually that is where rock bottom comes in for most of these types of personalities. At the end of their rope, their only choices seem to be to step off the chair, or pray.
Thank God I prayed.
I would love to say there was a great shining white light that scooped me up in all encompassing joy and handed me a list of all the things that I was to do next to ensure my life was fulfilling and I am content here...
Ya....no. That didn't happen. But I did find relief from my fears and my unhappiness, and I became open to letting people give the support and guidance I had been neglected as a child.
Over time I have learned that the guidance is within me. I have to meditate, listen very close in silence to what is behind it and that is where I will find the answers.
Having had 28 years to practice a different way of operating, this new idea seemed difficult and too slow....but practice makes progress and year after year I keep trying and I don't give up.
It is becoming clearer to me now, that voice within, and much easier to access.
Now when I feel off coarse or unsure I know what to do to get help and to find direction.
The new challenge for me is in actually doing it.

2008 Regional Yoga Championships!
This event is open to all practitioners of Hatha yoga who would like to participate. This event is also open to everyone else! -whether you practice yoga or not- come and watch, be inspired and support our growing yoga community!
The yoga championship is not just about individuals competing - but provides the impetus to challenge each to rise and be the best he or she can be. It also is about the promotion and general understanding of yoga throughout the general population. An ultimate goal is to lobby the Olympic committee to create a competition division for yoga.
"Inner peace, grace, composure, charisma, discipline and determination are what create champions. A championship is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the full potential of a regular, disciplined practice. For those who are interested in taking their yoga practice or anything they do to a new level, there is no better impetus than entering a contest," says Nora Jeanne Walsh.
"The event itself serves two purposes; it propels the contestants to rise to their personal best physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, and, in turn, inspires the audience through their performance," Walsh says, adding, "The overwhelming response from those who have competed has been amazement at both what they were able to achieve and the way the whole process changed their lives. Those in the audience have walked away with a desire to learn more about yoga and some are inspired to achieve similar results."
